Itinerary

DAY 1: Saturday March 28th : ARRIVAL DELHI

Upon arrival at Delhi airport transfer to hotel.

Room available from 1400hrs. Delhi, one of the oldest cities in the world, has an excellent ambience of an old city in Old Delhi, and the modern in New Delhi.

The perfect combination of old and new worlds makes it a fascinating option to explore.

DAY 2: Sunday, March 29 | DELHI

Breakfast. Morning visit to Humayun's Tomb, the mausoleum of the second Mughal Emperor Humayun. The tomb is perfectly situated in a Persian garden, it features an ingenious combination of red sandstone and white marble on the exterior appearance of the building.

Later we will visit Gandhi Smriti (also called Birla House), the place where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life and was assassinated on January 30, 1948. Next, we will visit the Sikh-Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Temple which allows us to enter one of the most important places of the Sikh or Sikh religion and share its traditions and customs, a must on a visit to Delhi. Then we will take a walk through the government buildings, Rashtrapati Bhawan (residence of the President of India), the Parliament and the Gateway of India (Arch of Triumph). Lunch included at local restaurant.

Afternoon visit to Old Delhi, passing by the Red Fort, built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, you will enjoy a ride on a rickshaw (bicycle cart, pulled by man) in Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and largest bazaars in India. Crisscrossing through narrow streets with stores fighting for space, Chandni Chowk gives the feel of old Delhi shopping. Since the 17th century era, this place has been rightly called a "shopper's paradise" in Delhi.

During the reign of Shah Jahan, there was a tree-lined canal running through its center and reflecting the moon. Hence, the name "Chandni Chowk" came about, meaning "place of moonlight".

Then we visit the Jama Mosque, the largest mosque in India.

DAY 3: Monday, March 30 | DELHI/JAIPUR

Breakfast. Morning departure by road to Jaipur (Approx. 300kms, 4 hours), the capital of Rajasthan, also known as "The Pink City" had turned terracotta pink in 1876 to welcome Prince Albert.

Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel.

In the afternoon we will visit Patrika Gate, one of the most photographed places in Jaipur. While the gate is just one of Jaipur's many architectural wonders, the opulent design is truly breathtaking. And the vibrant and intricate walkways serve as a true reflection of Rajasthani culture. Later, we will visit the Birla Temple, originally known as the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, built of pure white marble and dedicated to God Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

DAY 4: Tuesday, March 31 | JAIPUR

Breakfast.

Morning visit to Amber Fort with ascent and return to/from the Fort by jeep. Amber Fort, situated on the picturesque and rugged hill, is a fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. Built by one of Akbar's most trusted generals, Maharaja Man Singh I in the year 1592, Amber Fort served as the main residence of the Rajput rulers. Amber Fort through its great ramparts, several gates and paved roads overlooks the Maotha Lake in the city of Amer, which used to serve as the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Jaipur. Then stroll through the beautifully restored Jal Mahal, a former royal pleasure pavilion. Afternoon visit to the Maharaja's City Palace, which houses the former Royal Residence and a museum celebrating the collection of the royal family of Jaipur.

Then visit the Hawa Mahal or the Palace of the Winds - the five-story facade of 593 latticed stone sieve windows, an emblem of the city of Jaipur. Also visit the Jantar Mantar or the Astronomical Observatory. This is the largest and best preserved of the five observatories built by Jai Singh II in different parts of the country.

Later enjoy a Tuk-Tuk ride to explore the exotic 'bazaars' of Jaipur to discover the artistic richness of the region, visiting 'Bapu Bazar' (for textiles) and 'Johari Bazar' (for jewelry). Walk through the markets for fruits, vegetables, spices and visit small temples and interact with local people. Finally transfer for dinner and attend a typical Rajasthan dance show.

DAY 5: Wednesday, April 01 : JAIPUR / AGRA

Breakfast. Morning departure by road to Agra (Approx. 240kms, 5-6hours) en-route photo stop at Abhaneri to see the Chand Baori step well with its precise geometrical design and maze of steps and to explore its rural surroundings. Lunch included at the Laxmi Vilas Palace in Bharatpur.

Continue by road to Agra, visiting Fatehpur Sikri en route. Fatehpur Sikri was the first planned city of the Mughals and was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1564 AD. It served as his capital for 16 years. Later, due to water shortages, Akbar had to abandon this city. Continue by road to Agra, an ancient city as mentioned in the great epic 'Mahabharata' and was the center of attention during the reign of the Mughals. It is famous for being home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is a monument of such incredible elegance that it is considered synonymous with beauty in itself. Transfer to the Hotel.

DAY 06: Thursday, April 02 | AGRA

Breakfast. Morning visit of the Taj Mahal* (closed on Fridays), the most fascinating and beautiful monument in India. The Taj Mahal was completed in 1653 AD by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his favorite queen, Mumtaz Mahal. This perfectly symmetrical monument took 22 years of hard labor and 20,000 workers, masons and jewelers to build and is set amidst landscaped gardens. Also visit the Agra Fort, an imposing fortress on the banks of the Yamuna River, built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565 AD.

In the afternoon we will be invited to a local home to meet a family and enjoy a culinary demonstration where we will learn the art of cooking Indian food with homemade dinner included. Afterwards, we will have a demonstration of how to tie a sari and the opportunity to apply Mehendi (henna, a temporary tattoo). Return to the hotel.

Visitors will now have only three hours to complete their tour of the Taj Mahal, from the time of entry to departure. The three-hour time limit starts after passing the ticket barrier and the security check starts after that. If a tourist stays inside the complex for more than three hours, a fine of INR600 per person, which is approximately USD 10 per person, is payable. Rules and regulations are subject to change at any time.

DAY 07: Friday, April 03, 2011 - AGRA/VARANASI

Breakfast. Morning transfer from the hotel to the railway station for your journey to Varanasi.

Upon arrival you will be met and transfer to hotel in Varanasi, considered one of the oldest in the world, there are few places in India with as much color, charisma or spirit as the ghats that bathe along the Ganges River in Varanasi. The city of Shiva is one of the holiest places in India, where Hindu pilgrims come to wash away all life of sins in the Ganges or cremate their loved ones.

In the afternoon we drive to the old part of Varanasi where the ghats (pavilions that go down to the sacred river Ganges) are located.

Time to stroll through the bazaars for shopping or window shopping. Next, you will witness the prayer ceremonies on the ghats (stone steps) of the Ganges River where priests perform the Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat. The entire Ghat is illuminated with a divine light that can be strongly felt. The magnificent ritual involves huge bronze lamps lit with oil and the priests chant the holy mantras that reverberate throughout.

DAY 08: Saturday 04 April : VARANASI / DELHI

In the morning at dawn we arrive at the Ganges to experience a boat ride on the Ganges River to see the Hindu rituals on the Ghats (a flight of steps leading down to the river). The large river banks in Varanasi are high with 18th and 19th century pavilions, palaces, temples and terraces. Each of the hundred ghats occupies its own special place in the city's religious geography.

Later, pass through Manikarnika Ghat, the cremation ground to the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, followed by a stroll through the old city, its narrow lanes, bazaars and experience the vibrant street life of the holy city of Varanasi.

Return to the hotel for breakfast.

Then visit the Sarnath, the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon and also visit its excellent museum (closed on Friday). Room until 12:00 noon.

Later transfer to the airport for your flight to Delhi (flight not included). Upon arrival stay in transit to connect your international flight back (Must be at the airport 3 hours before flight departure time).
